Bluegill fishing is terrific in the fall, as the larger fish come out of the depths and gather in huge schools. Small jigs tipped with waxworms or small chunks of nightcrawler, or either on a bare hook, work just fine, but you have to constantly move along the drop-offs until you locate a school, then you can anchor and fish as long as they keep biting. If they quit biting, they have moved and you should move to try and relocate them, or they were scattered by a large predator and should gather back together in a few minutes.
With the days getting shorter, and the water temperature dropping, the fish pick up on this trend and really strap on the feed bag. Plus, it doesn't hurt at all that there is significantly less boat traffic and some wonderful colors that reflect off the water on those calm days. Some of the best fishing of the year in comfort, splendor and success can be had in September and October.
